A month in UK

It's been 3 weeks since my arrival in Egham, Surrey for my one month's work stint. I figured I better start jotting down details before my memory fails me.

Arrived at London Hathrow Airport on an early Sunday morning.  The company had arranged for a cab to pick me up, thank god.  Egham was just 15-20 mins away from the airport.  I had to stop by the office HQ to pick up the keys to my place of stay, The Old Caol Yard serviced apartment.  The apt unit wasn't easy to locate, prolly cos I didn't realise that number 11 on the envelope meant my unit number...go figure!

Anyway, with the help of the kind cab driver, I finally found it.  The place was seriously big for me alone.

The kitchen
The living room and small dining room.

Upstairs bathroom - HUGE! I should pamper myself in here more.

Upstairs bedroom

Egham is a small town in Surrey, south east of England. The biggest shop here is probably Tesco Express.  This is my hang out place on evenings when I just didn't feel like going home straight from work.  Pathetic...that's for sure.  My office is roughly about 15 mins walk from the apartment, which isn't too bad. It is nice to walk in the cold actually.  More reports soon....

Scrapbooking

Suddenly had this interest to start scrapbooking.  I think it will be an interesting project and it'll be nice to do something creative instead of wasting time in Twitter & Facebook or watching TV.  Reminds me of the days when I did art stuff to earn badges during the Girls' Brigade years.

My Catch at the Big Bag Wolf Book sale 2011

This event is called the "Biggest Book Sale in the World".......well, I'm not sure about "the World" part but this sale is definitely bigger than the one I went to 2 years ago. Books at this sale are really ON SALE.

This year, the event is held at MAEPS, Serdang from Oct 7-16. I arrived 45 mins too early and was able to get a nice parking spot.  That wasn't my intention really....I left the house early because I figured that I will need more time to locate MAEPS.  I never heard of this place til this book sale is on.  Nonetheless, despite checking google maps for direction the nite before and relying on my iPhone GPS to get there, I still got lost...twice!  Took me a whole lot longer than it should be.  Anyway, upon arrival, saw a shuttle bus but it was already leaving as I was parking.  Yes, they provide shuttle services as the car park lots were slightly further away.  I decided to walk to the event Hall instead.  It wasn't really that far but then again, I wasn't carrying heavy books, so not big deal.

Saw a long queue as I approached the area...did a quick check and found out that the Sale only started at 10am.  To kill time, I took a stroll to the loo.  Came back to find an even longer queue >.< Bored to death barely 5 mins into queuing up, and those pesky OCBC Bank sales people are really annoying.  Yes, I know they are just doing their job of promoting credit cards but I was approached so many times I was ready to scream bloody murder.

Finally, the Hall door opened!  Tons of books everywhere.  The Hall was really spacious and there were more Cashier lanes.  The space between tables were also wide enough...though people still bumped into each other, especially when carrying boxes to store their goodies.  I tried to be courteous but after a while, I couldn't care less if I accidentally bumped into anyone.

After almost 4 hours browsing and queuing up to pay, I walked out of the Hall with these....

There were so many cookbooks at this sale. Due to my lack of culinary skills, I resorted to only getting easy meals recipes...ahaks. Price: between RM6-RM10.

Another cookbook...this one I like because it shows frame by frame...very useful for someone like me who has trouble following even the simplest of recipes. Price: RM12.

These hardcover history books were really a bargain. Priced at RM15 and RM12 respectively. I was happy to get these.

The one and only fiction novel I bought.  There weren't that many Robin Cook titles that I found..I only came across Crisis and Foreign Body.  I already owned the latter. This one is hardcover.  Price - RM8.  Dirt cheap!

Total damage done at this Sales - RM75.  Not bad for 7 books.  I was a little disappointed I walked away empty handed at the Travel and Fitness/Health sections.  I didn't find anything I wanted at those tables.

Decided to take the shuttle bus to the car park instead of walking as it was scorching hot outside, plus my feet were tired and the books were heavy..and I was hungry. Ended up getting lost on the way home too >.<

Hopelessly still not motivated..

A couple of months ago, I had plans to make the rest of 2011 my serious workout months and healthy eating, in the hopes of achieving some out of reach abs.  It doesn't hurt to fantasize a little....about the abs part.  Let's just say that I am planning a self imposed bootcamp at home, on non gym days.  I had wanted to start this in Oct. I was supposed to be prepared come October.

Well, it is now officially four days into October.  I had done absolutely no additional workouts at home.  I didn't even feel motivated to even begin doing this.  And even if I were to start, I am slightly clueless on how to begin.  Should I get a DVD workout program by some badass trainer? I would love to own a P90X dvd by Tony Horton but it is so freaking expensive.  Jillian Michaels' dvd would be the next best option but I would need to get it from Amazon, and since I am a chronic procrastinator, I don't see this happening anytime soon. Well...I can follow some workouts from the recent Shape magazine but I will need equipments....u know...the basics....some dumbbells, mat.

Interestingly enough, 1.5 years ago I wrote a piece about getting my own fitness equipments.  Sad to say,  I had made absolutely no effort to do that.  Now I'm questioning myself...am I really seriously on this self imposed bootcamp program?  Until I get at least a yoga mat and some weights, I don't see how I can even be motivated to even begin...

On the bright side (I think...), at least my food choice is slowly taking off, though I am nowhere near eating steamed food.  That is another story altogether.  Maybe I should pop into a fitness shop this weekend..to at least survey prices..though actually purchasing something would be even better.

A day of ATV-ing

I dragged my ass to another new adventure - ATV! Seen this sport activities many times before but never really ever thought of actually giving it a go.....until now. A group of us, 12 in all, went this morning to ATV Adventure Park at Kpg. Kemensah for some fun and adventure ride of our life.

ATV Adventure Park is apparently the largest ATV park and is located just behind Zoo Negara.  They offer outdoor jungle trails with several different packages.  Check it out at http://www.atvadventurepark.com/index.htm,  The place is actually located at the entrance next to Zoo Negara and is quite a long drive in.  Signboards are available though very minimal, and is not clear enough.  We found out that there is actually another smaller ATV place a few meters before ATV Adventure Park.

Upon arrival, just like any other extreme sports, we were asked to sign waiver forms.  This is basically to say that in the event of accidents, ATV Adventure Park will not be liable.  I didn't really read the whole form...I just filled in my details and signed.

We were given a short briefing on how to handle the bike.  Some of us were a little nervous (me included) and we paid as much attention to the briefing as possible.  We were then given a short practise training with the ATV to familiarise ourselves with the machine.  It was kinda scary at first handling such a big vehicle but after 2 rounds of practise, we were given the green light to start our jungle journey.

As we have a big group, we were divided into 2 groups, with each group having 2 guides.  Quite a relief!

The ride itself was fun, exciting but at the same time a little scary especially when going up a 45 degree uphill.  The first uphill was not a problem.  All ATVs must be slightly far apart when going uphill, for safety reasons. On the second uphill, we saw that it was kinda steep, and naturally we were all a little nervous.  My friend, the first rider went up and went too close the side, causing the ATV to tumble sideway.  That moment really set a panic on the rest of us who were waiting at the bottom of the hill.  Luckily, she was alright, with just minor scratches on her arm.  As the second rider went up, the guide was sorta assisting by pushing the ATV up.  At this point, I was getting even more nervous......this uphill is really challenging??  I was third to go up.  The guide beckoned me from the top, signalling to go up and told me to press the accelerator more.  That was it...no coming down to check on me, no guiding me up, nothing!  As in any surviving situation, I did what I had to do....give it my best.  Went all the way uphill with no problem at all....phew! what a relief...it wasn't as bad as I had thought.  The rest of the journey went well.  The ATV wasn't that easy to handle...my thumb was tired from pressing the accelerator and both hands were tired from pressing the brakes.  Still, it was all fun.

We reached a 7-tier waterfall and spent sometime resting.  I had enough of the water after a while and went back to the ATVs for some camwhoring with the machines...ahaks.

The journey back was the same route, the uphills became the downhills.  I was initially a little worried because earlier on at the start, my ATV's had engine died on me,  It was prolly because I pressed both brakes too hard.  Anyway, the journey back was much faster and without any fear at all.  Yippeee...

Actually before we even realised it, we were already back to the starting point.  The day started on some fear but ended on high notes.

Our ATV package was priced at RM100 for 1-1.5 hours ride to the waterfall trail. It was quite worth it considering that we had a total of 8 guides with us.

Gooooooood Workout

Great Pump class workout this evening.  Biceps feeling a little sore..and it's not even tomorrow yet.  Haven't had this kind of feeling in a long time. I wasn't too thrilled when the instructor played his choice of track list during bicep track but now I shall give thanks to P!nk's Raise Your Glass song..

I am going to enjoy my soreness tomorrow....

Mulu Caves, Mulu National Park

Having never gotten around to ever writing about my adventure to Mount Kinabalu 5 months ago, I thot I'll do justice this time and review my trip to Mulu Caves at  Mulu National Park a week ago.  This trip was booked almost immediately upon return from Mt.K when most of the group members were still in their adventure mood.  We departed from LCCT on a 7.20am flight, reached Miri Airport at 9.15am and had 4 hours to kill at the airport as our next flight to Mulu was scheduled to be at 2pm.  To make things worse, the flight to Mulu was delayed for yet another 20 minutes!  Talk about boredoom indeed. Some of us killed time by camwhoring.  Can't blame us...

Our flight to Mulu was with MASwings, my first time onboard twin otter aircraft.  It cost us RM226 return.  The journey took just 30mins.  It would have taken a whole day if we opt for boat ride to Mulu.  Upon arrival, we were taken immediately by our guide to a waiting bus.  Since our flight was delayed, we now had to rush to the national park so that we can get on with our caves exploration that was scheduled for that afternoon.

Our guide took us to 2 of the 4 caves that was in our package - Deer Cave & Lang Cave.  From the national park office, it was a 3km plank walk to the caves.  Along the way, all we saw was rainforest. Not much of floras.  I was still hoping to catch a glimpse of pitcher plants, having failed to sight any in Mt. K. No such luck...

We had to walk across this suspension bridge as part of the plank walk.  Only a certain number of people are allowed through at a time. Really shaky walk.  The naughty ones will purposely jump to make the bridge even more shakier.

The first visit was to Deer Cave, so named because once upon a time, deers found shelter in the cavern.  This is the world's largest cave passage, some 2km in length.  Huge!  The minute I walked in the entrance, I was in awed. The passage was strategically lit in some areas but it still helps to have a torchlight in hand.  I didn't bring mine so I just walked close to the group members who had one.  The stalagtites and stalagmites in this cave were amazing.  Simply beyond words.  You really have to see them to be in awed.

One of the great feature in this cave is the profile of Abraham Lincoln, at the southern entrance of the cave. You will only notice this if you turn around and you can only see this profile at the right angle. Move a little and you won't see it. Interesting huh?

Deer Cave is home to thousands of bats.  The cave is said to be full of guano smell though I found it to be not too stinky afterall, at least not the point of needing any mask.

Lang Cave is just a few km away from Deer Cave.  Amazingly enough, it was very windy in certain part of both caves.  It was like as if we were at a beach resort.  The visit to both caves was a little rushed for us and I wished we could have spent a little bit more time to admire the beauty of these caves.  The guide was trying to get us to the bats observatory platform quickly to witness thousands of bats flying out of the caves in formation.  The bats are said to fly out, if the weather permits, at around 5-5.30 pm and the whole formation usually last about 30 mins.  This was said to be highlight of our visit.

Whilst quickly walking out of Lang Cave, I could see some bats circling high in the sky.  Excitement crept in.  It was as if they were preparing to fly out.  I didn't want to miss this great phenomenon so I walked as fast as I could. It was already 5.30pm then, and it started drizzling as well.  Unfortunately for all the tourists, none of us got to see the bats flying out.  Some said the bats had flown out at 5pm, whilst some speculated that the crowds' cheers drove the bats back inside.  It was a real disappointment.

We headed back to the park office to wait for our transport back to Royal Mulu Resort, our stay for this trip.  The transportation was a real let down.  We had to wait for 15-20mins before a 4wD came and it could only fit 10 ppl at a time.  We saw a bus came in but later found out that we had to pay RM6 if we want to board it.  Ridiculous...

The ride back to the resort was in total darkness.  There was no street lamps. Understandbly, this was very much a rural area still.  The resort however, was well lit. We were the last group of tourists to return from the national park and by then, the food at the buffet line were pretty much finished, though the kitchen did replenish as fast as they could. I was hoping to see some local Sarawakian delicacies, eg. midin (fried fern leaves) or ayam pansuh (chicken & lemongrass cooked in bamboo) or at least sarawak laksa, but saw none of those.

We retired to our room immediately after dinner although there was a cultural performance at 8pm.  It was raining then, and we had to walk to our rooms, a metres away, in the open space. Luckily the resort provided umbrellas on loan, first come first serve basis.

I was put in a 3-bed room, consisted of 1 king size bed and 1 queen size bed.  I took the smaller one while my friend took the bigger one.  The room was spacious and could easily fit another double bed.

The next day, our trip was to Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave respectively, with the afternoon at a waterfall.  To reach the caves, we had to take a 15-min longboat ride on the Melinau River, followed by a 200 stairs climb.   My friend, worried about the long climb, decided to stay behind at the jetty.  The climb really wasn't that difficult, although it might be slightly slippery due to the rain the nite before.

The Wind Cave was called such because there is a tunnel that is really windy.  Unfortuntely for us, since it was a cloudy day, the air was not hot enough to send any cool wind into the cave.  Next to Wind Cave was Clearwater Cave, Asia's longest cave.  We went through the Lady Cave, where a formation looks alike a woman figurine.  This cave was less lit though walking thru wasn't that difficult. The sight inside was spectacular! Due to the large crowd, it was kinda difficult to listen to the guide's explaination of what each formation meant.
At the underground caves, there was a river flowing thru the cave. This river is said to be crystal clear but with barely enough lightings in here, it was hard to tell if it was really crystal clear.  Standing in here watching the river currents running thru, it was simply awesome.

After visits to both caves, we were back to the jetty where lunch was served, carried in by the guides, consisted of rice, veggies, chicken curry, bamboo shoots.  The portion was miserable for a crowd of 24.  Anyway, made do with whatever there was.

The package mentioned free time at waterfall after lunch.  To our disappointment, this waterfall was no waterfall...it was just a a river with really strong currents.  Big disappointment, I was hoping to snap some photos AT a waterfall.

The rest of the afternoon was free and easy for us.  We rested for abit, some swam at the resort pool, some decided to go to a real small waterfall nearby, the Paku Waterfall, which is free of charge. It was to be another 1.5km walk thru the national park.  I initially wanted to join in but opted to try out archery instead, which was really a let down.  It costed RM25 for 4 arrows, 3 rounds. We later found out that the resort only had one bow. We were taken to an area behind our chalets to shoot.  Insect repellant is a must! I was pretty much bitten by mosquitos even though I applied it. We only did 1 round as the bow was real tough and it wasn't much fun waiting for each other to have their turns.

Dinner was at the same place. This time, since we were early (in fact, one of the earliest), food was plentiful and definitely better than the nite before.  Since we didn't have anything else to do that nite, we stayed behind for the cultural show.  As a Sarawakian, I was definitely shameful of this show.  It was pathetic at best and did not reflect the real Sarawakian ethnic dances.  The costumes were the only saving grace, I must say.  After the show, our group dispersed.  My friend and I walked around the resort a little bit for photography.

The next day we checked out after breakfast and a short rest in our room.  The flight back to Mulu was at 12noon.  Again, we had 5 hours to kill before flight back to KL so we hired cabs to town for some sightseeing. It cost us RM20 to town.  Nothing much to see really.  It was a Sunday, most shops were closed, everything was quiet.  We popped into 2 handicraft shops for souvenirs. We decided to head back to the airport and hung out there instead.

This was a good trip.  The caves were amazing.  This is a must to do thing in a lifetime.  On the downside, we wasted too much time waiting at the airport.  Our group was too big, thus we couldn't spend more time in the caves as most of them walked really fast. Overall, it wasn't that bad.

Alert: Fitness bitchy rants

I just feel the need to rant, bear with me....

Upon arrival at the gym's locker room last evening and at my usual locker corner, I noticed one member sitting on the bench putting on her shoes.  The entire bench was totally occupied with her bags, 3 in total.. gym bag, handbag, shoe bag, and of course her clothings.  This I don't understand.   This wasn't the first time I noticed some gym members doing this though. Why couldn't they put their stuff into the locker while they are changing?  Don't be so selfish, others need to use the bench as well when they are changing shoes.  Luckily for that lady tonite, she did have some sense to push her bags aside; at least enuff for me to sit down. I shall not call her a stupid dork then.

As I was queuing up at the restroom (I was in front), one lady barge in and stood right in front of one of the toilet door.  OK, ever heard of civic manners? When there is already a queue, you queue, not cut in front.  Lucky for me, the toilet nearest to me became vacant and I was able to use the toilet first. If it was the one nearest to her, I would have eye marked her. Stupid dork!

Yesterday was the instructor's last class at this club as she will be taking some months off due to health reason.  Being a rather popular instructor, naturally the class tonite was packed! I managed to find myself a good spot in the studio so no complains there.  So, this instructor (as she was saying her thanks) was then reminded by one member that it had been 5 years since she started teaching at the club.  To this member....duh! The club just celebrated its 6th years anniversary....this means that instructor has been with the members since 6 years ago, you dork! I knew very well because that member and I joined the same time (ie. when the club newly opened) and the instructor then was new to teaching too. So, why am I bitching about this? Well, just want to. I didn't like that member either...she goes around like as if she owns the gym. Initiated a conversation with her once when we were new and decided afterwards, I didn't like her. Stupid dork!

With the class almost over, suddenly one member who was on the 2nd row came to the back of the class (when we were right in the middle of the track), stood next to me and made a gesture to me to move to her spot instead.  I was like, WTF! Who the hell are u to squeeze into my area (and don't forget the studio was already packed) and then had the audacity to direct me to the front?? Lady, you were in front for 45 mins and then you decided at the last 15mins you didn't want to stand there? OMG is an understatement. Another stupid dork!

The only good thing I could say out of last evening's class was the tracks selection, which we were informed, were track requests from some members.  I was more than happy than there were no recent releases tracks.  New tracks suck!  Not the songs but the choreography..

Can't say if I will ever enjoy this class the way I once used to....
